In this work, a novel, pressure-assisted coprecipitation method was utilized to synthesize cholate and stearate-capped zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4) and manganese ferrite (MnFe2O4) nanoparticles. Powder X-ray diffraction was used to analyze the spinel crystal phase of the nanoparticle core. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the presence of the organic capping agents. Size analysis was performed using dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. The bactericidal efficacy of the particles was studied against 8 species of bacteria in the genus Xanthomonas. The methodology included standard plate counting, and comparing colony counts of broth cultures of bacteria that have been exposed to the nanoparticles against a control. The as-synthesized metal ferrite nanoparticles showed strong magnetic response when exposed to a neodymium magnet, but the particles were found to form &gt;100 nm agglomerates in solution. To reduce particle agglomeration and introduce new functionality, surface modification of the particles by ligand exchange was explored.
