CO2 utilization as the most representative greenhouse is paid attention by various researchers, thus diverse CO2 conversion technologies and catalysts for photocatalysis, biomass catalysis, thermal catalysis and electrocatalysis have been conceived. Especially, CO2 electroreduction is regarded as outstanding technology owing to mild reaction condition and high conversion efficiency. Among various catalysts, Cu-based catalysts are effective in CO2 electroreduction followed by C2+ species production which is highly important chemical as intermediates for various valuable chemicals. Among the Cu-based catalysts, HKUST-1 metal organic framework (MOF) as the most representative Cu-MOF can be utilized for electroreduction of CO2 as well as traditional thermochemical CO2 hydrogenation which is still known as the most feasible method for commercialization of CO2 conversion technology. By the way, the same catalyst can produce different products via different reaction routes, thus C2H4 is the target product of electrocatalysis and methanol is produced via CO2 hydrogenation reaction with CO as by product generated by reverse water gas shift (rWGS). Therefore, the prepared HKUST-1 catalyst in the research was utilized for both electrocatalysis and thermal catalysis simultaneously to scrutinize the different role of the same catalyst. Furthermore, HKUST-1 synthesis condition was optimized and the prepared catalysts were subjected to pyrolysis with N2 and calcination with air separately to grasp the change of various phases of Cu-based catalysts which induced distinguishable effect with varying product distribution. Therefore, catalyst preparation condition including air calcination and N2 pyrolysis led to the different catalytic activity during CO2 electroreduction and thermal catalysis as well. And the effect of various properties of Cu-based MOF can be unraveled by catalytic activity test and characterization results which can be conducive to design the optimum and desirable catalyst for various CO2 conversion technologies.
