Despite the progress, the highest power conversion efficiency of all-polymer solar cells is only 18.2%. To understand and thus control the movement of localized electrons in donor-acceptor-type conjugated polymers is the key to improve the power conversion efficiency. In our prior work, we synthesized ladder-type, nitrile-functionalized oligo(p-phenylene)s, and used pulse radiolysis coupled with time-resolved infrared spectroscopy to probe electron delocalization. Although it offers a superb infrared reporter for probing electron delocalization, nitrile is not commonly incorporated in the solar-relevant polymers. In this talk, we report our selection of carbonyl as a new infrared reporter in ladder-type oligo(p-phenylene)s for the same purpose. In particular, we focus on our molecular design and synthesis, our electronic structure study by MeV ultrafast electron diffraction, and our theoretical calculations and modeling for the structure-property relationships.
