Radical-driven advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), such as HR-AOPs based on hydroxyl radicals and SR-AOPs based on sulfate radicals, have been widely used in the treatment of micropollutants in drinking water and wastewater. It has been found that the second-order rate constants k-values often has good correlations with the molecular descriptors (MDs) in the reactions of structurally similar micropollutants with single radicals. However, more than one kinds of radicals are usually generated in AOPs systems, and there is still a gap in the kinetic studies on the degradation of different pollutants by different radicals in the system. Therefore, the construction of single radical systems is one of the important research fields. In this study, UV254 light was used to activate persulfate (PS) to generate radicals, and a certain amount of tert-Butanol was added to quench .OH to construct a single SO4-. system (studies have demonstrated that TBA can rapidly quench .OH while hardly reacting with SO4-.). This system was used to degrade 20 pollutants and determine their second-order rate constants k-values, then the QSARs of k-values and the MDs was established to investigate the relationship between them in the reactions of SO4-. with different types of pollutants.
