Samples of generic formulation tablets containing 81 mg of acetyl salicylic acid (aspirin), were exposed to pH = 6.00, 7.00 and 8.00, phosphate buffer in a dissolution apparatus at 37°C. The rate of drug release from each tablet delivery system was measured by collecting 5.0 mL samples at 1.0-minute intervals over a period of 30.0 minutes. After collection of the samples was complete the samples were quantitated using a UV spectrophotometer. The lambda maximum wavelength for aspirin is 237 nm. The data was then plotted using a three-dimensional kinetic model to identify the release kinetics and obtain the rate constant for each drug concentration. The results observed, based on these dissolution studies, suggest that the rate of drug release from each formulation either increases or decreases depending on the pH of the buffer system.
