In recent years, the rise of antibacterial resistance has posed a large threat to the medical community. In order to overcome antibacterial resistance, researchers have started to create new antibiotics in attempts to find a wider variety of drugs that can be prescribed for bacterial infections. The goal of this research was to create new antibiotic compounds from naturally occurring dienes. To begin this process, hetero-Diels-Alder cycloadditions of dienes and diene products were performed to make a small sample of functionally dense small molecules that can be further elaborated to make potential antibiotic compounds.
