Luminescent lanthanide ions (Ln3+), with their unique luminescence characteristics including sharp atomic-like emission spectra and long lifetimes reaching the order of milliseconds, are favorable luminophores for a wide range of applications spanning the fields of telecommunications, sensors and lighting. In this contribution we present a series of mixed-lanthanide and mixed-ligand MOFs featuring the same bridging ligand within three different structural types, showing structure-dependent emissions across the visible region, thereby constituting favorable platforms for white-light luminescence. We investigate the effect of different doping levels in both the red-emitting Eu3+ and the blue-green-emitting amino derivative of the bridging ligand, into the parent frameworks. Detailed photophysical studies reveal emission quantum yields of up to 87%, for Eu3+-doped materials, and up to 17% for Eu3+-and-ligand-doped materials. Time-resolved measurements at both room temperature and 77 K, show strong evidence of thermally activated energy transfer pathways within the frameworks. Furthermore, we carry out fine tuning of the emission profiles by careful adjustment of ligand-and-metal doping levels to achieve white-light luminescence. Overall, this work demonstrates the ability to fine tune the combined emission characteristics of a collection of chromophores by their incorporation in different structural platforms.
