Nanotechnology promises to have widespread application in the biomedical field. Expanding our knowledge and synthetic capabilities of main group metallic nanoparticles will open up new areas of application. As the heaviest stable metal, bismuth nanoparticles (BiNPs) have been shown to be a relatively cost effective nanoparticle for use in many biological applications, building on bismuth’s history as a medicinal agent. We will report on the synthesis, purification and characterization of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) coated BiNPs and progress towards the synthesis of an amphiphilic ligand-coated BiNPs.
