We have synthesized a number of 2,10-bis(adamantyl)dipyrrins with varying meso aryl substituents, and several of their corresponding divalent transition metal complexes (M = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn). Luminescence spectra of these complexes were obtained in an attempt to decipher the steric and electronic effects of the meso substituent on luminescence behavior. To this end, the phenyl, mesityl, naphthyl, and anthracenyl derivatives were synthesized to explore sterics, while several fluoroaryl and alkoxyaryl derivates explore electronic effects. Herein we present the observed trends in steric and electronic effects on luminescence emission wavelength and quantum yield.
