Two isolates from soil bacteria from 2000-year old soil at a Spanish archeological site (P12-3d and Y15-3f) were shown to make antibiotic products. By BLAST analysis of the 16s rDNA sequences, both appeared to be Streptomyces albireticuli with a 99% assurance. The two isolates appeared to be different when cultured on potato and rice media. P12-3d growth on potato plates appeared raised and irregularly shaped, with a green-brown coloration that is relatively smooth. In contrast, Y15-3f on rice media yielded multi-clusters with a flat rhizoid-shape and a pale-yellow coloration. We plated Y15-3f on potato media and P12-3d on rice media and noted that they could change their growth habit. We then grew them in liquid cultures to compare their antibiotic products. We are predicting that some Streptomyces may be induced to product new antibiotics through changes in the culture media.
