Environmental and pharmaceutical chemistry have both seen an increased focused on developing methods for dearomatizing planar cores of molecules into three dimensional scaffolding onto which stereogenic centers or additional functionality can be added. Our laboratory has recently discovered a method for dearomatizing substituted naphthols using an atom-economical chlorine transfer. Previously, the dearomatizing chlorination reaction was optimized to use an effective, green solvent. In this investigation, we aim to test the method’s functional group tolerance along with synthesizing a larger substrate library to expand the scope of the reaction’s usefulness.
