Precious metal nanoparticles, such as gold, silver, and platinum, have been thoroughly studied and produced for their versatility in catalysis, electronics, cosmetics, medicine, and many other applications. Given their extensive uses, noble metal nanoparticles and their cations are unintentionally released into aquatic environments in concerning quantities as they are increasingly incorporated into industrial manufacturing and commercial products. This has led to growing considerations about the potential toxicity of precious metal nanoparticles to humans and ecosystems. Previously, we investigated the dissolved organic matter (DOM) mediated synthesis and stabilization of Ag-Au bimetallic alloy nanoparticles in aquatic environments. In this work, we sought to determine whether it is possible to synthesize and stabilize Ag-Pt and Au-Pt alloy nanoparticles in aqueous media in the presence of DOMs. A preliminary understanding of the mechanism in which precious alloy nanoparticles are formed is essential in deriving their fate, transport, and toxicity in natural aquatic media.
