Carbon nanothreads are sp3-enriched 1D polymers that are achieved through the polymerization of abundant molecules (e.g., furan) at gigapascal pressures. Their columnar-like diamondoid structure allows them to pack in a crystalline lattice, giving rise to a high predicted tensile strength and flexibility. Whereas carbon nanothreads are emerging as challenging synthetic endeavors, the need for high initiation pressures to synthesize them precludes scalability and limits scope. In this contribution, we will disclose our methods to synthesize these sp3-hybridized 1D carbon-based polymers at reduced pressures from simple petroleum-based or biomass-derived sp2 feedstocks.
