Emerging pollutants (EPs), are a new class of anthropogenic pollutants which can cause adverse effects on human health and the aquatic environment. One of these EPs, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (2-MBT), is a known carcinogen often found in wastewater streams of pharmaceutical industry and hospitals. To eliminate these EPs from the environment, new and environmentally safe water remediation techniques must be developed. A photocatalyst that has shown great promise in the cleanup and degradation of organic pollutants, is Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles. Photocatalytic studies have also shown an increased catalytic activity upon the functionalization of TiO2 nanoparticles with polymers such as polypyrrole, polyacetylene, and polyaniline. Polyaniline (PANI) is one of these polymers that shows promise as an enhancing agent for the photocatalytic effectiveness of TiO2. This work aims to investigate and categorize the kinetics of the photodegradation efficiency using UV-Vis spectroscopy and mass-spectrometry techniques of the organic pollutant using the functionalized TiO2/PANI catalyst nanocomposite.
