Nitrogen doping of CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) by a simple and environmentally benign urea thermolysis method is first studied, and its effects on the scavenging activity of reactive oxygen radicals (ROS) are investigated for PEM fuel cell applications. The physicochemical properties of the N-doped CeO2 samples (N-CeO2), characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, showed a significantly high N doping level (2 - 12 atomic %), which results in a proportional increase of the lattice oxygen vacancies on the CeO2 crystal surface. Collective kinetics analysis revealed that the radical scavenging activity increased proportionally with the number of surface oxygen vacancies on the samples. Enriched with abundant surface oxygen vacancies by the N doping treatments, the N-CeO2 prepared by urea thermolysis at 873 K provided about 1.3 – 2.0 times greater intrinsic radical scavenging activity than the pristine CeO2, suggesting high effectiveness of the N doping of CeO2 NPs by the urea thermolysis for enhancing radical scavenging activity.
