Chemistry courses require a combination of both expansion and application of the demanding topics presented in class. Conventional approaches in the subject have been adjusted to better aid students and professors. Group-based and independent learning techniques, such as discussion boards and small group assignments, have been increasingly utilized in the field, allowing students to build upon primary foundations set in the course lecture. Implementing these methods fosters a beneficial environment in which individuals may achieve their academic goals by engaging in the collaborative learning environment. This presentation summarizes the application of several methods in order to facilitate active participation of students both within the confines of the classroom and beyond. Quantitative data was produced by organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry course discussion boards employing “total posts”, and “total participants” calculations; qualitative data was obtained through student testimonies and development seen throughout the given semester. Results from the introduction of these methods in various Medicinal chemistry and Organic chemistry courses showed a remarkable enhancement in student engagement, communication, problem-solving skills, and academic improvement overall.
