This study investigated the antimicrobial properties of 8 different oils (cinnamon, oregano, peppermint, an “antimicrobial” blend, clove, rosemary, eucalyptus, and lemon) and 6 different antibiotics (kanamycin, neomycin, ampicillin, gentamycin, tobramycin, and thiamphenicol). Cinnamon, oregano, peppermint, an “antimicrobial” blend, and clove were tested from two different brands, Young Living and Plant Therapy. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) tests were run for each antibiotic and each essential oil and values were successfully identified except for lemon. Along with testing the essential oils and antibiotics individually, synergistic properties were examined between antibiotics, antibiotics and essential oils, and essential oils. Synergy was not found in any of the synergy trials, but several more combinations could be tested in order to find synergistic properties between antibiotics and essential oils. E. coli ATCC 25922 was used for all antimicrobial and synergistic assays.
