Molecular organization in semiconducting thin films has shown to be one key factor for improving their optoelectronic performances. For instance, nanosegregation of electron donor (D) and acceptor (A) moieties into highly ordered molecular architectures is extremely promising for optoelectronic applications. In this context, we are developing new mesomorph hybrid materials combining a molecular engineered π-conjugated mesogenic electron donor and lacunary Keggin-type polyoxometalate (POM) electron acceptor. Because of their opposite chemical nature, the covalent linking of the organic donor and the inorganic acceptor will lead to the self-organization of the material in successive donor and acceptor subdomains. Such subdivision should favor charge transfer/propagation properties thus improving the material’s photophysical performances.<br/>Such material was previously synthesized and characterized in the research group using calamitic mesogens leading to lamello-lamellar self-assembly. We propose to extend this approach to discotic mesogens in order to develop multi-columnar organization. We hence propose to synthesize and fully characterize a donor-acceptor hybrid material based on tetrafunctionalized pyrenes as organic electron donor and lacunary Keggin-type POM as inorganic electron acceptor (Figure 1). Such material is expected to exhibit nanosegregation properties and charge transfer properties.
