The Henderson State University Student Affiliate Chapter, the Chemistry Club, has been actively working on continuing to create a welcoming environment for students interested in science and providing ample opportunities for community outreach. The Chemistry Club remains focused on creating an environment suited to current and future student success despite the changes being made at Henderson. We will highlight our community outreach, such as chemistry demonstrations performed by the Chemistry Club members at Family Science Night and the Garland County Library. We also hosted fundraisers, such as bars of soap made in the lab and hot chocolate bombs made by club members. We are using our scientific platform to deliver presentations of science-affiliated careers, such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and research, to the students at Arkadelphia High School to encourage them to gain an interest in STEM. Our club has also allowed members to explore chemistry applications outside of the classroom by touring two local breweries to observe the chemical processes involved in brewing beer. Several members participated in the INBRE Fall Conference at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas, with two Chemistry Club members selected to give oral presentations.
