Over the past decade, there has been rejuvenated interest in the coordination chemistry of formazanate ligands, which often impart unique and useful redox and optical properties to the parent complexes. Our work has focused primarily on boron difluoride formazanate dyes, which have shown utility as light-harvesting materials, near-infrared dyes, and cell-imaging agents. More recently, we showed that the properties of formazanate-based heterocycles could be dramatically altered upon introducing oxoborane units (1) as well as monocationic (e.g., 2) and dicationic (e.g., 3) boron. These ligands can also be used to stabilize group 14 radical anions (e.g., 4) and long oligoyne chains (e.g., 5). Our recent advances in these areas will be presented.
