The mechanics of the reinforced composite materials is quite different when the continuous fiber is used as the reinforcement compared to that of the regular composite materials reinforced by chopped fibers. This difference is even wider when the composite is made by additive manufacturing. Most of the recent studies on 3-D printed fiber reinforced composites are based on the resistance of the materials against tensile or compressive load. This work studied the performance of continuous fiber reinforced polymer composites against torsional load. The composites were fabricated using a specialized 3-D printer which is capable of feeding the fiber continuously into the polymer melt. Carbon fiber was used as the reinforcing component in onyx matrix, a nylon based polymeric material. Composites were fabricated by varying the fiber content and other parameters. Mechanical tests were performed to study the effect of infill pattern, fiber content, and fiber orientation on the torsional resistance of the composites. The results show a significant effect of these parameters on the ductility and toughness of the composites. While addition of fiber up to a certain percentage, increases the strength of the composites showing higher value of shear stress, it decreases the ductility of the composites with the increase of the fiber content. The quantitative value of the torsional resistance, the effect of other parameters such as fiber orientation and infill pattern, and the microstructural analysis using scanning electron microscope were studied and will be explained in detail in the final presentation.
