The formulation of new colorants that are both inherently colorfast and stable is an active area of research. By reacting carbazole and a trichlorotriazine-based reactive dye a reactive monomer can be formed. This monomer can then undergo a Suzuki coupling reaction with a linking monomer which, depending on the number of aromatic rings it contains, can change the shape of the overall supramolecular cage. By covalently bonding the dye to the cage an extension of conjugation can be achieved increasing the overall stability of the dye and also allows for the retention of the reactive dye to fabrics. This circumvents the pitfall of host-guest chemistry which causes a decrease the of reactivity of the dye, as the dye is now involved in intermolecular interactions with the host cage. With the manipulation of the cage along with the linking monomers, this work explores the creation of more stable, vibrant reactive colorants.
