Additively manufactured (AM) conductive styrene butadiene rubber-based (SBR-based) nanocomposites, having excellent mechanical flexibility and electrical response, are of great interest in a wide range of potential applications. Direct Ink Writing (DIW) is one of the most widely used, highly versatile extrusion-based AM techniques, which can utilize a wide range of ink formulations for producing 3D-printed structures with desirable tailored properties. This work aims to demonstrate the viability of 3D printing of new ink formulations to fabricate styrene butadiene rubber-based nanocomposites filled with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) using DIW technique. This study also investigates the effects on the rheological, mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of the 3D-printed nanocomposites upon the addition of varying amounts of MWCNTs. Electrical responses under varying load conditions such as stretching, compression, and bending will also be presented to demonstrate its potential use as strain sensor. The results of this study can be of great contribution to explore and extend the potential use of 3D-printed SBR-based nanocomposite sensors to different applications such as automotive, aerospace, and flexible electronics.
