In the last decade or so, catalytic inorganic nanoparticles with enzyme-like activities have been actively studied owing to their outstanding performance in many biomedical applications such as sensing, imaging, and therapy. Compared to natural enzymes, these catalytic nanoparticles are more stable and often time more effective in catalyzing certain reactions. Among various types of nanoparticles, noble-metal nanoparticles have received particular attention due to their superior catalytic activities and excellent stabilities. In this talk, I will introduce our recent work on noble-metal nanoparticles with enzyme-like activities. In the first part, I will introduce our strategies to design and synthesize the nanoparticles with optimized enzyme-like activities. In the second part, I will discuss the application of these nanoparticles in biosensing. Examples of <i>in vitro</i> diagnostics of disease biomarkers enabled by the nanoparticles will be highlighted.
