The motion of sodium and three neurotransmitter cations through the inside of a 1.0-nm diameter, 1.1-mm long single-walled carbon nanotube has been studied as a function of pH. The ionic mobility of sodium, acetylcholine, choline, and dopamine cations increases as pH decreases from 7.0 to 3.0 and then levels off as pH continues to decrease. The mobility is also dependent on the size of the cation, with smaller cations having greater mobility. This observed pH dependence of ion mobility is consistent with hydrogen ions screening surface charges.
