Late transition metal complexes bearing dipyrromethene ligand scaffolds have received interest in a variety of catalytic applications. However, the coordination chemistry and reactivity of late transition metal complexes bearing dipyrromethane scaffolds remains unexplored to the same extent. In this work, a series of novel bisdipyrromethane ligand scaffolds have been designed and synthesized in efforts to understand the coordination chemistry of bimetallic late transition metal complexes bearing these ligands. Divergent complexation reactions involving the ligand scaffolds have afforded a series of reactive four-coordinate and three-coordinate complexes of Fe and Co. These complexes have been characterized by a variety of spectroscopic techniques including single crystal X-ray diffraction studies and will be described. The redox activity of these novel complexes has been probed by electrochemical methods and their subsequent chemical redox activity will be discussed.
