To reduce simulation complexity, a computational model for a single nanoparticle can be created by using periodic boundary conditions, cutting the object and area of interest into some geometric fraction, reducing the amount of points that need to be calculated for in finite element analysis. This method is known to still be highly accurate for computational electromagnetic studies, despite reducing the amount of calculations drastically, as long as the simulation space is large enough to prevent particle interaction. Because boundary conditions are repeated, additional nanoparticles are unintentionally simulated along the periodic dimensions. If insufficient space is given to the nanoparticle in the simulated region, it will interact with the other nanoparticles, which could impact the data generated. The purpose of this work is to understand how the size, packing method and material of the nanoparticle can affect the required spacing for minimal interaction. Additionally, the work will also investigate periodic nanoparticle interaction to study periodic effects and the limit between period arrays and single nanoparticles. Two-dimensionally square arrays and hexagonal close packed spherical gold nanoparticles of varying sizes are studied that have spherical and cubic silver nanoparticles.
