ω-Aminoalkylsilanes, such as (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) and (11-aminoundecyl)triethoxysilane (AUTES) have long been used to create self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on surfaces to promote desirable properties such as better adhesion. The terminal amine group is also a convenient functional group handle to covalently conjugate other materials to a surface. Over the last several years, our group has used the latter strategy to modify APTES- and AUTES-functionalized surfaces with catalysts capable of performing surface-initiated catalyst-transfer polycondensation of conjugated polymers. Through microcontact printing, we have been able to chemically pattern these polymer films. Our expertise with APTES- and AUTES-functionalization has recently led us to investigate the ability of these SAMs to inhibit the growth of bacterial biofilms. In this presentation, our most recent results in both these areas will be discussed.
