Ionic liquids are salts that exist as liquids near ambient temperatures. Their strong Coulombic forces lead to some distinct intrinsic properties, such as a low vapor pressure. Thus, ionic liquids have many potential applications, including as a solvent for biopolymers and for carbon capture. We will discuss how we revealed the molecular level features of ionic liquid driven carbon capture through a combination of molecular simulations and experiments. These results indicate that polymer materials that contain ionic liquids are a viable approach to effective carbon capture systems.
