Quaternary diamond-like semiconductors (QDLSs) are being investigated for infrared nonlinear optical (NLO) applications as the materials can shift coherent, monochromatic light in lasers to other desired wavelengths. Current materials used in the military, medical, commercial, and industrial fields are typically ternary compounds, such as AgGaS2 and AgGaSe2. These and other materials are not ideal as they frequently have problems related to their low laser-induced damage thresholds (LIDTs), multiphoton absorption effects, difficulty of crystal growth, or limited phase matchability. Our research involves discovering novel QDLSs of the structure types I2-II-IV-VI4 and I4-II-IV2-VI7 as the additional element in these compounds gives further compositional flexibility for improved tuning of NLO properties, which includes the band gap, LIDT, and second harmonic generation (SHG) response. Before the NLO properties can be accurately assessed, the materials are prepared as a pure phase through high-temperature, solid-state synthesis and characterized using single crystal X-ray diffraction, X-ray powder diffraction, and diffuse reflectance UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy. From there, the microcrystalline materials are sieved into discrete particle size ranges and examined for their NLO properties, while compared to a known optical-quality standard.
