The development of effective and stable catalysts for electrochemical conversion of renewable feedstocks, such as water and carbon dioxide, to energy-dense products is the main challenge in the establishment of a practical solar fuel scheme. Nitrogen-doped carbons have shown promise as electrocatalysts for the electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) because of their ability to make C1-C3 products as well as their stability and low cost. Here we report on the methodology for the controlled synthesis of N-doped carbon based on pyrolysis of complex macromolecular architectures containing poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN). Carbon materials made from PAN star polymers proved to be more efficient electrocatalysts than materials derived from linear precursors. Dependence of the CO2RR product composition on the structure and morphology of the carbon electrocatalysts will be discussed.
