Copper surfaces are active catalysts for energy-relevant processes, ranging from CO2 reduction to deoxygenation of oxyanions. The synthesis of a “surface-like” tricopper µ3-oxo compound supported by a chelating tris(carbene) ligand scaffold is reported. Subsequent reactions with borane reductants convert this species to either tricopper hydride complexes (HBpin) or an unusual reduced tricopper core featuring unsupported 3c2e Cu–Cu bonding (B2pin2). The electrons stored in the Cu3 core are exploited in reductive small molecule activation; reactions with H2, CO2, and CO will be discussed. Recognizing the both the oxophilicity of the reduced Cu3 unit and the mild conditions for deoxygenation, inspires oxotransferase-like catalysis.
