The synthesis of vinyl arenes through the Pd-catalyzed Mizoroki-Heck coupling reactions have seen great use in academic and industrial settings.  Recently, Ni-catalyzed methods have emerged as an inexpensive substitute for Pd. However, these methods rely on highly-activated, electron-deficient aryl bromides or iodides to achieve high yields. We recently disclosed a mild strategy to generate a highly reactive Ni<sup>0</sup>(phosphine) complex that can activate aryl bromides, chlorides, and triflates via a ligand rebound event. To explore the generality of this method, this work details the systematic evaluation and ligand design to optimize and enable the Heck-type coupling of challenging electrophiles.
