In this work, the spatial bis(catecholato)silane molecules on different metal surfaces are investigated by an ultra-high vacuum low-temperature STM and DFT stimulations. It is found that the spatial conformation of bis(catecholato)silane shows an obvious dependency on the underlying metal substrates, due to the interaction between Si-O bonds and the metal surface. Naturally, the conformational difference results in the self-assembly and on-surface chemistry behaves visibly different. Moreover, the coverage of bis(catecholato)silane also shows influences on the self-assembly structures, indicating that the interaction among organic molecules plays a secondary effect on the molecular conformations. We believe that this study reveals a fundamental knowledge of the spatial molecules on surface, especially their self-assembly and on-surface chemistry behaviors.
