Peracetic acid (PAA, CH3C(O)OOH), an emerging oxidant/disinfectant, has been extensively applied in various industries, including food processing, pulp and paper, medicine, and municipal wastewater treatment. Recently, PAA has received much attention as a promising oxidant in advanced oxidation processes for efficient degradation of micropollutants (MPs) in wastewater. Manganese (Mn) is one of the common transition metals found in natural environments and has a wide range of oxidation states from +2 to +7 in aqueous solutions. Water soluble Mn(II) has been extensively studied as a homogeneous activator for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and PAA. We recently reported that picolinic acid (2-pyridinecarboxylic acid; PICA) is a highly efficient chelating agent that accelerates the reaction of PAA with Fe(III) and facilitates the oxidation of micropollutants by the Fe(III)-PAA process in a neutral pH range. This study investigated whether PICA could dramatically improve the catalytic efficiency of Mn(II) for PAA oxidant efficiency in water. The study objectives included: (i) investigating the degradation of various MPs (methylene blue (MB), bisphenol-A (BPA), naproxen (NPX), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and carbamazepine (CBZ)) by the PAA-Mn(II)-PICA system under different reaction conditions (i.e., molar ratios of Mn(II) to PICA, solution pHs, molar ratios of Mn(II) to PAA, and buffers), (ii) demonstrating the feasible application of the PAA-Mn(II)-PICA oxidation process for the removal of MPs in real waters, and (iii) evaluating the generation of major reactive species in the PAA-Mn(II)-PICA system by using several scavengers and a probe compound. PICA has little adverse environmental impact and manganese is ubiquitous in natural aquatic and terrestrial environments. Thus, the PAA-Mn(II)-PICA oxidation process could be a promising advanced oxidation technology that can efficiently remove MPs in environmental water matrices.
