Objectives: Due to the long pandemic and martial law in Ukraine, most students switched to distance learning. This made it much more difficult to gain knowledge for children with cochlear implants (CIs), because they have difficulties with speech understanding through a computer speaker. In addition to this, not all the teachers have the experience of distance working with CI children of remote work.
In this research were studied factors, affecting on the results of distance learning in children with speech deafness after 10-13 years of multichannel cochlear implant use, to be able to identify educational factors, that are contributing to obtaining the maximum benefit from implants.
Methods: The sample included 47 14- and 16-year-old children from Dnipro (Ukraine) who were implanted at age of 3-4 years old with the Medel 12-channel implant.
Characteristics of speech recognition through a computer speaker was studied in children with cochlear implants (33) and with use of additional listening devices (FM system, Roger, AudioLink) with CI together (14)
The comparison was made with children with normal hearing.
Results. A regression analysis showed that 75% of the participants with CIs had much more difficulties than their peers with normal hearing.
Children with CIs had better speech recognition on computer with the use of an FM system or AudioLink, compared to the conditions without any additional devices.
In the FM-system or Roger conditions, the hearing thresholds were much lower (up to 20 dB) compared to all other conditions.
Visual support and high sound quality also matters.
Conclusion
To improve the quality of distance learning for CI children, it is recommended:
Stable Internet access, good audio and video signal quality (sound and image are synchronous). Visual support: sufficient monitor size (for a child), good illumination of the teacher's face.
To minimize the influence of unfavorableacoustics and strong reverberation.
To use a microphone near the teacher's mouth that does not pick up extraneous noise.
