Background: A recent real-world survey study evaluated the multidimensional burden of transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) in 208 pairs of patients treated with symptomatic but not disease-modifying therapy and their unpaid primary caregivers, recruited from amyloidosis centers of excellence in 7 countries.
Methods: This post hoc analysis used univariate and multivariate analyses to evaluate selected study items as predictors of caregiver burden, as measured by their Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) score (range 0-88; higher scores indicate a higher burden).
Results: Caregivers in the original study were generally female (85%) and the spouse (59%) of the patient, with a median ZBI score of 13. Patients were generally male (86%) and elderly (median age 81 years), with symptomatic heart failure. Their median Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire Overall Summary (KCCQ-OS) score was 68, and median Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) sub-scores were both <8. In univariate associations, the patient’s New York Heart Association class, KCCQ-OS, and HADS sub-scores were significantly (P<0.05) associated with caregiver’s continuous or categorical ZBI scores. In the full multivariate models, the patient’s KCCQ-OS score was the only significant (P<0.05) predictor of caregiver burden. The final models were optimized using forward selection and CV Press criteria with 8-fold cross-validation. Both included only KCCQ-OS as a predictor of continuous (regression coefficient: −0.26 [95% CI: −0.33, −0.20]) and categorical (odds ratio for no burden vs mild to moderate burden: 0.96 [95% CI: 0.94, 0.97]) ZBI score.
Conclusion: A higher caregiver burden was best predicted by poorer health status in the patient.

Predictors of burden in caregivers to patients with untreated transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy PC33 (#7)

We invite you to attend the XIX International Symposium on Amyloidosis to be held in Rochester, MN.

This symposium is organized as a hybrid meeting (with the focus on in-person) held from Sunday, May 26 through Thursday, May 30, 2024.

Together with the ISA Board and members of Mayo Clinic, a very attractive scientific hybrid program is being planned. The program will cover a variety of types of systemic amyloidosis: ATTR (hereditary and wild-type), AL (light-chain), AA and less frequent forms. There will be key lectures, specific symposia including those company sponsored, oral presentations and poster sessions of accepted abstracts.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This program will provide a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art education in systemic amyloidosis: basic science, pathophysiology, diagnosis, current and emerging treatments. Scientific presentations will include competitive oral and poster abstracts. The rapid evolution of scientific discovery and expanding treatment options has created tremendous interest in the field and this meeting will fill and important gap in educating scientists and clinicians.
