Turnover of primary care clinicians is complex and multifactorial. Proposed causes of turnover have included clerical burden related to EHR use. Previous studies have primarily focused on physician causes of turnover with one study showing less time spent in the EHR was associated with increased physician turnover. Little is known about associations between APP turnover and interaction with the EHR. This study aims to evaluate the association between objective EHR workload and efficacy data and turnover of APP Staff. A retrospective cohort study will use Epic Signal Platform data to examine workload and efficiencies of primary care APPs in a large Midwest academic medical center from 2019-present. Independent variables including panel size, in-basket tasks, number of patient visits, time in direct patient care, and panel management will be collected and analyzed in context of impact on the dependent variable of staff turnover. Type of analysis: Descriptive analyses will be reported along with predictive analysis with logistic regression models with Epic Signal Platform explanatory variables and an outcome of having left the APP position.

Understanding the relationship between Electronic Health Record (EHR) use and Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Turnover

This annual interdisciplinary course offers participants an overview of current topics in internal medicine including interactive case studies using automated audience response system. Interdisciplinary speakers present diverse clinical topics chosen for applicability to NP/PA and primary care physician practice settings.  As complex patients transition care to the outpatient arena, current guideline based medicine typically initiated in the hospital setting continues to be important as patients transition out of the acute care setting.
