This presentation conveys the results of Pipeline Research Council International (PRCI) Research Project EC-08-11, Pipeline CP Monitoring Using Real Time Current Measurement. The extensive field-based research evaluated over 250 miles of pipeline with varied characteristics. It marries long-established pipe current measurement techniques with high-resolution remote monitoring technology. Findings include real-time pipe current monitoring is more sensitive than pipe-to-soil potential monitoring for detection of corrosion control upset conditions such as stray current interference and loss of pipe electrical isolation. Guidance on incorporating pipe current monitoring into a remote surveillance protocol is provided.
