International Conference on Transportation & Development (ICTD) 2021

The ASCE Convention is the Society's flagship membership event. It is the single annual opportunity that the entire Society is represented together and reflects the diversity of civil engineering that ASCE encompasses. ASCE Convention 2021

This conference brought the experience and knowledge of experts in the aerospace industry together to share and discuss the latest research and engineering techniques that effect the exploration and settlement of space. Presentations were made in multiple concurrent symposia over three days. Topics included: Granular materials in space exploration, exploration in utilization of extra-terrestrial bodies, advanced materials and designs for aerospace and terrestrial structures under extreme environment, structures in challenging environments, and space engineering, construction, and architecture for the moon, Mars, and beyond.

Due to challenges with COVID-19, this 17th Biennial was moved to April 2021 and was offered in a virtual format.

Earth and Space 2021

Civil engineers have had the leading role and vital responsibilities in creating and maintaining the built environment for centuries. Creative minds have given life to communities by providing managed water resources and environment, developed transportation and energy systems, expanded ports for trade, and advanced structures and building systems. As our world expands through innovation, technology, and in population, civil engineers have a renewed call to action: Ensure that the built environment is safe, dynamically resilient, sustainable, future-ready, and adaptive to changing climate conditions.

As the United Nations and governments across the globe are implementing requirements and regulations for public and private entities to disclose carbon impacts, civil engineers will be ready to respond, helping to mitigate carbon emissions, and respond to the demand for resilient infrastructure and community designs.

ASCE Inspire Conference 2023: Infrastructure Innovation & Adaptation for a Sustainable & Resilient World

Geo-Extreme 2021 aims to create a multi-disciplinary forum to discuss how the geo-engineering community can work with other professionals, e.g., climate scientists, engineers, emergency managers, resilience and sustainability investigators, insurance experts, and policy makers, to properly cope with extreme events (such as hurricanes, floods, extreme precipitations, droughts, wildfires, debris flows, earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides) under a changing climate.

There is an urgent demand to advance design practice so that climate-informed environmental hazards can be incorporated into our standards and building codes. Development of design criteria that address future hazard conditions requires application of climate science to engineering requirements for environmental hazards and reassessment of current approaches for addressing risk, as reliability methods based on historical events cannot fully address the risks for future nonstationary.
During this panel session. Jennifer Goupil will begin with a broad overview of current efforts underway at ASCE — especially those in collaboration with federal partners NOAA, NIST, and FEMA — to advance best practices, standards, and codes for climate resilient designs; followed by the following topics:
(2) NIST Roadmap for Incorporating Climate Projections into Codes and Standards for the Built Environment, based on a critical assessment of current data, methods and practices and research and implementation steps needed to incorporate climate science into codes and standards and improve resilience. By Marc Levitan;
(2) ASCE/SEI plans for incorporating future climate-informed environmental hazards into design guidance and standards, including highlighting progress of the new ASCE 7-28 Subcommittee on Future Conditions of Environmental Hazards, and goal to get this information into practice even before publication of ASCE 7-28. (3) Future climate-related activities and support for code development and adoption in the President’s National Initiative to Advance Building Codes, along with climate-related aspects of FEMA’s Future of Flood Risk Data, FEMA Risk Rating 2.1, and the Federal Flood Risk Management Standard. Integrating Future Climate into Codes and Standards

Until recently, ASCE 7 and model building codes specifically excluded tornado hazards in the design of conventional buildings. Therefore, it is not surprising that our buildings and infrastructure perform poorly in tornadoes – given that they are not designed to resist tornadic loads. As a result, tornadoes kill more people in the U.S. than hurricanes and earthquakes combined, with most tornado fatalities occurring inside buildings. Additionally, tornadoes and tornadic storms cause more insured losses than hurricanes and tropical storms combined.

The panelists will provide a brief overview of tornado hazards, the rationale for consideration of tornadoes in conventional engineering design, the latest science on tornadic winds/wind-building or other structure interaction, and an overview of the new tornado load requirements in the ASCE 7-22 standard and the forthcoming 2024 International Building Code. Key changes to the ASCE 7-22 wind load provisions, which are incorporated into the tornado loads, will also be addressed.

The new tornado requirements represent nothing less than a paradigm shift in wind load design – one that will reduce damage from tornadoes as well as other windstorms across much of the central and southeast U.S. Tornado loads on several example buildings at locations across the country will be shown in comparison to wind loads, e.g., uplift loads on roofs can double or more. Impacts of the increased tornado loads on structural and on roof system selection and design will be discussed, along with highlights of an economic analysis examining the estimated cost impacts of the tornado load provisions.

Industry leaders are having to look and redefine the engineering team to ensure client satisfaction is met while still protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the general public.

The Competitive Workforce

Electric vehicle (EV) adoption rates continue to increase in the United States, including interest by the long-haul trucking fleet. For the trucking fleet, battery weight can be problematic, but can be overcome by in-motion charging, where the charging systems are embedded in the pavement to create cost efficient and seamless charging networks. The ASPIRE Engineering Research Center has initiated research to investigate how to design and construct these pavement-embedded charger systems. Such research involves developing new pavement materials and construction methods that can serve to better integrate power charging systems into flexible, rigid, and composite pavements.

Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer: Charging Your Electric Vehicle While You Drive

PFAS comes from consumer products and manufacturing processes that have been used in the US for decades. These hazardous compounds are now ubiquitous in our soils, air, and water. Federal and state governments will need to spend billions in taxpayer money to remove these "forever chemicals" from our natural resources. But, where is the money best spent? In this session, panelists will discuss where to draw the battlelines and get the most value from the limited resources available to mitigate these chemicals. This discussion will include the emerging technologies that are available to ultimately separate, concentrate, and destroy PFAS in our environment and how to effectively communicate the risks of PFAS to the public.

Fighting PFAS: Where Should our Money Go?

Building on an Action Plan based on the priorities and opportunities identified at the ASCE 2019 Civil Engineering Education Summit, ASCE has embarked on a bold effort to lead engineering education into the 21st century. Initiatives include establishment of a Civil Engineering Education Innovation Working Group under the auspices of the ASCE Committee on Education; partnering with Clemson University and the National Science Foundation’s Revolutionizing Engineering Departments (RED) Program to produce the 2023 Civil Engineering Education Summit; and convening education leaders from several professional societies to discuss a roadmap for the future of engineering education and how it can best serve the needs of society for the coming decades.
This session will explore how ASCE is working to attain the objectives put forward at the 2019 Civil Engineering Education Summit:
• Elevating professional skills to the same level as technical skills
• Reimagining the domain of civil engineering
• Attracting more diverse individuals to the profession through inclusive and equitable practices
• Fostering an ongoing dialog between academia and industry
